Over the many years of Facebook debates, one stands out more than any other, Does Pineapple Belong on Pizza? This controversial subject has torn apart thousands of friendships with those who like pineapple on pizza and those who don’t.
Many people believe that putting the fleshy fruit on to a pizza breaks with Italian traditions. Real Italian pizza was made with tomatoes, herbs, mozzarella cheese, with a yeast base and cooked in a brick oven.
The pineapple was first introduced to the pizza in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos an inventive Canadian Greek who had put Pineapple on his pizzas to attract more customers to his Ontario based restaurants, the name Hawaiian is from the brand of pineapple that he used.
For years pizza parlors have created different types of pizza varieties, and ready-made pizzas are now found in most stores freezers to feed the pizza lovers appetite.
Pizza is popular with people all around the world, especially with college students. Every country has their favorite toppings and choices of stuffed crusts to serve everyone’s different tastes, even though all of these breaks with the Italian pizza making traditions.
